Sir Bobby Stewart

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death on Wednesday of Sir Robert Christie Stewart, father of our current Lord-Lieutenant, Johnny Stewart, and himself the holder of the post between 1995 and his retirement in 2001 on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

Bobby, as he always preferred to be known, had a distinguished military career before returning to civilian life on the family estate at Arndean. He threw himself into the life of the community and did so with great vigour and enthusiasm and was always a welcome and welcoming figure at local events. In his usual, self effacing way, he was quietly pleased but very modest about receiving his Knighthood after his retirement as Lord-Lieutenant, saying that it had been his pleasure to have been of service.

Although he retired from the Lieutenancy, he continued to be involved in local affairs and was particularly pleased to see the recent reopening of the Japanese Garden at Cowden under the direction of his daughter.

Our condolences are extended to his wife, Lady Grizel, to whom he was married for over 65 years and to his surviving children and wider family at this very sad time.

A Service of Thanksgiving will take place at the Church of Scotland Parish Church on Bridge Street, Dollar at 2.30pm on Tuesday 8th October 2019.
